American Indians in the United States

Complete the vocabulary matching.
Read each paragraph and break it down to its basic (main) points.

The First Americans
     Thousands of years before Europeans came to America, Native Americans, or American Indians lived here.  There were many different tribes, or groups, of American Indians.  Some Indians lived in the forests, some lived on the plains and some lived in the desert.

Native Americans have been here for many years and have lived in many different places.

  1. When Europeans came, they helped and hurt the Indians.

    Horses helped Indians travel and metal tools helped them build, cook, and hunt with guns.

    Europeans took land from Indians by buying it or fighting and killing them.

    Settlers wanted Indian land for farms but did not want to share.

    The Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced Native Americans to leave their lands and move west.

    The Trail of Tears was when one-fourth of the Cherokee died when the government forced them to move.
